Mean Green top Hilltoppers

Ok, just got back and I have more on my mind than I can put on the screen. This isn’t a recap, but more general thoughts from a very exciting game. You can find the recap in the DRC.

First and foremost, I am VERY proud of this team. More on why in a bit. This team played what has become Mean Green basketball for the first half and kept it going much into the second half. True team basketball was seen with driving and dishing with productive defense on the other end.

Quincy played well in the post. Keith Wooden seemed very active in the paint with hustle plays. Probably one of the worst non-calls I have seen came when Wooden was smacked across the face going up for a shot in the 2nd half. He made the shot anyway, but this no-call resulted in a broken nose with blood on the floor. I can’t quite say what the ref was looking at on that play. Stuff like that happens.

The Mean Green Defense played well in the first half. They were focused on Courtney Lee – a player touted as an NBA prospect. No doubt he has major talent. He had the “overrated” chant began on him many times – probably not deserved, but usual fan heckling that comes with being a talented player.

Western Kentucky brought a large group of vocal fans that were solidly behind their team for the entire game. Many seemed to be there in support of #20 Orlando Valdez, a San Antonio native. While their crowd was very active, they were outmanned and outmatched in Denton. The new rowdy student section was a force all night. Chants were constantly yelled during almost every trip down the floor. The volume of The Pit rose as the night wore on. Something happened in the second half though. With NT playing pretty poorly on offense, WKU was making their second half run (which whittled an 18 point lead down to 1) the TALONS/Pit Crew stepped up. You read that correctly, The Talons. The student section was rowdy, but the alumni of both sides just wouldn’t get out of their seats.

“Stand-Up” **Clap Clap** “Stand-Up” **Clap Clap**

It was then that the place went crazy. Everyone in The Pit jumped to their feet and cheered on THEIR team. The energy in Denton was the best I have ever witnessed in The Pit. I truly believe that the crowd played a large part tonight. Players LOVED it. One unidentified player came over to The Pit Crew and stated , “You guys won this game”.

Which brings me to the team and why I was so proud of them. They played amazing and then played very poorly to let a feisty Hilltopper team come back. Johnny Jones takes a lot of crap from us fans and many times it is justified for times like tonight’s comeback. But tonight we saw the team buckle down and demand that this game was theirs. Players were constantly waving their arms to pump up the crowd. But wait…….it gets better. They just didn’t want to win a game………..they wanted to win for the University of North Texas. Mike Sturns hit two clutch shots and flashed the eagle claw to the crowd on his way back down the court. Jared Ruffin was making the letters U-N-T with his arms right along with the crowd during the fight song. The bench players were just as much fans as we were. For this reason I was spilling over with pride because for the first time, I felt like they loved this school as much as I did. I wanted to win so badly so that our guys could taste this victory that they wanted us fans to taste even more. After the win the team came around the entire arena and high fived the front row. This is something that has been done before, but not like this. This time it was more slow and deliberate and genuine.

Mean Green fans be proud - There are guys wearing green and white that want to win for YOU and YOUR SCHOOL.

Denver Game Thoughts

Ok, a few thoughts on the UD game:

There was an effort to get the ball into the paint (finally!) Denver had nobody that could stop Wooden or Q, and I got to see a bit more of what Wooden could do. He showed a nice touch but this time added a bit of physical to his normal finesse. The offense then worked like we all have known it could. Things began to open up all over the floor. There were quality shots put up by our team all night. Very few "hope for the best" heaves - though there were a few.

Denver is everything that we must fight from becoming. They have never seen a 3 they don't like. As we all know too well, when those 3's are falling, you can win on most nights. When they aren't falling (which eventually they won't), then, as Ivan Drago says, "You will lose".

KD certainly is getting back into it, and I think we truly have gotten a best case scenario out of the injury. The team is playing a different type of game than it did when most of the O went through him. There are usually 4 scoring options at all times on the floor.

Sturns is becoming a super duper player.

Now..........lets talk about what we all know we are concerned about. .....long term success. I honestly haven't seen defense that makes me think we do what it takes to go next level. I saw some nice flashes in the second half, but they had many of those 3's in the first half were lightly guarded. This is the time when most of us have gotten burned by thinking past teams were "special". I think the smarter fans are being cautiously hopeful, but not willing to go all in emotionally. It is just such a let down each year to get your hopes up and then to have them dashed with an early confernce tourney exit and a .500 record.

Mean Green defeat Tulsa

basketballicon.jpgComing off the troubling news of losing Kendrick Davis to a hand injury, the Mean Green were in need of a boost.  After an impressive road victory at Rice, NT welcomed former Ryan Raider Brett McDade and Tulsa to Denton.

The Mean Green saw a great performance off the bench from Michael Sturns.  Sturns poured in 21 points on 5-11 shooting while nabbing 3 steals from the Golden Hurricane.  His spark off the bench helped North Texas to stay within striking distance for the duration of the game.  Sturns was also solid at the stripe for most of the contest.  He was 9-12 from the line on a night where just about any contact drew a whistle.

Ben Bell was thisclose to becoming the goat of the day.  With the Mean Green up 3 points with 7 seconds remaining, Bell was fouled.  Hitting one of two free throws one make it a two posession game and make a Tulsa comeback highly unlikely.  Bell missed not one, but both free throws.  The transfer point guard tried to recover on the defensive side of the ball, but committed a silly foul behind the arc on Brett McDade that resulted in 3 free throws for Tulsa with 3 seconds remaining.  Yes, that is correct .........enough to tie the game.

Tulsa hit the first free throw as North Texas fans sat uncomfortably in the Super Pit.  The Mean Green recieved a break, however, when McDade missed his second free throw.   The third free throw was the climactic finish, as McDade missed (probably on purpose) and the ball bounced right to Tulsa sitting uncontested at the top of the key.

 He missed.

This was really too many bullets dodged by North Texas.  Much better shot selection and improved free throw percentages are a must if the Mean Green plan on taking their game to the next level.  Shooting 0.395 from the field and 0.292 three-pointers simply won't cut it.

Texas State - San Marcos comes to Denton this Saturday.
