NT Biology Professor Doug Root, just missed winning the U.S. Open Chess Championship last August despite not spending time devoted to chess. The U.S. Open was his first tournament in more than eight years.

The U.S. Chess Federation magazine, Chess Life, praised Root's showing aginst professional chess players, and mentioned that he was a professor at Texas Tech.
